July 6 - Camp Brosius
Wednesday
Kids had activities in the afternoon. They played mostly in the water...
Ian and I signed up for the Euchre tournament and had our first match (we got the good cards) and advanced to the next round.
In the morning, we organized a hike to town. The path was very pretty, along the lake for a while between people's lake houses and their boat houses. There were signs supporting the trail in some spots. But we got to a point, where there was a fence across the trail and we had to hike up to the road. We lost all of the grandkids at this point, but Maggie, Susie and I continued on into town.
The trail continued along the road up above the lake (there were actual trail markers) for maybe a mile, and then dropped back down to the lake for a bit before it went away from the lake as we entered the town. There are a couple of very large resorts on the lake as well as a golf course, and now, of course, some condominium developments.
But the town itself is pretty small (population of a little over 1000). Lore has it that it was a hangout for the Chicago mob in the 20's and 30's (there was a direct train line from Chicago) and they were responsible for at least one of the resorts, which was rumored to also have an (illegal) casino on the premises.
We wandered around a little and then headed back to camp via the more direct route along the county road north of the lake. Total hike was between 4 and 5 miles.
