July 5 - Camp Brosius
Tuesday
The kids had activities in the morning, so Timra and Susie and went for some sailing lessons. There were a number of watercraft that everyone could use, including sail boats, one fishing boat, a pontoon for lake tours, lots of paddle boards and even a couple of pedal boards (hydrobikes??), a couple of pedalboats, and an assortment kayaks and canoes. And everything was on the honor system. The only rule was that you had to have a life vest when out in the lake (outside of the swimming area).
After lunch, I was wandering about the lakeside when I saw 3 joggers running through the camp, past the kitchen/Dining room and the picnic tables are next to it. Next to that is the boat house that has all of the oars, sails and life jackets for all of the boats, paddle boards, and stuff. Next to that is the swimming area. There is a path connecting all of them, and the path continues on to a neighbor's yard.
The runners disappeared that way. I then assumed that was the path around the lake and there must be a way to go all the way around because most joggers don't do a route that doesn't connect.
So, I decided to try it out the next day.
Tuesday night was the adult dinner (with wine). The kids had their own cookout up near the playground. It was nice - we even got dressed up.
We met two other couples who were at the camp for the first time. One was not connected with IU - they were from Madison, Wisconsin, but it wasn't clear if they were connected with UW.
The other couple was from IUPUI. He was an architect in Indy and she was a lecturer at IUPUI. They had brought their 15 year old son and his cousin. We talked about the camp being so short of staff and if they had asked their son if he would help out. They said he was contacted but the offer didn't offer enough incentive to get him to help.
I told them what I did at the university and the woman told me a story of how she wanted to remodel the space for her department and make it really stand out. Then she ran into the Architect's Office. She also led a trip to Europe for some students and one was handicapped and she tried to get an advance to pay for cabs or other accommodations for the student to get around. Then she ran into the Travel Department.
She referred to the Administration as the "Kingdom of No". (I love it - A perfect description of what we did....).
